Sewage line problems can be a major headache for homeowners, causing inconvenience and potential damage to the property. So, it’s vital to know the common types of sewer line issues and understand how they can be addressed. Hence, this article explains some of the most prevalent sewer line problems and discusses pipe relining solutions to help homeowners deal with these issues effectively.

    Clogged Sewer Lines

They are one of the most challenging and common problems homeowners face. Blockages can occur for various reasons, such as accumulated debris, tree roots invading the pipes, grease buildup and other substances. And when a line is clogged, it can lead to slow drainage, gurgling sounds, foul odours, and even sewage backups.

In order to address clogged lines, several methods can be employed. One option is using a drain snake or an auger to remove the obstruction physically. Another effective method is hydro jetting, which involves using high-pressure water to clear the blockage and thoroughly clean the pipes. Meanwhile, in severe cases where the clog is stubborn, or the lines are damaged, professional pipe relining repair or replacement may be necessary.

    Leaking or Damaged Pipes

Leaking or damaged sewer pipes can cause significant problems if left unattended. These issues can arise due to corrosion, age-related wear and tear, shifting soil, or external factors such as nearby construction work. Leaks in sewer pipes can lead to water damage, foul odours, and even structural damage to the property.

Addressing leaking or damaged pipes requires professional assistance. And one solution is pipe relining, a non-intrusive method that involves inserting a new lining into the existing pipe to seal cracks or leaks. This technique eliminates the need for extensive excavation and can significantly extend the line’s lifespan. As such, in cases of severe pipe damage, pipe replacement may be necessary.

    Tree Root Intrusions

Tree roots are naturally drawn to the moisture and nutrients present in sewer pipelines. So over time, tree roots can infiltrate the pipes through small cracks or joints, causing blockages and damage. Signs of tree root intrusions include slow drains, recurring clogs, and gurgling sounds coming from the toilet or drains.

Addressing tree root intrusions requires a two-fold approach. First, the roots need to be removed from the pipes. This can be done using specialised cutting equipment or hydro jetting to clear the roots. And once the roots are removed, preventive measures should be taken to minimise future root growth, such as regular pipe maintenance and root barriers.

    Bellied or Sagging Pipes

Over time, sewer pipes can develop bellies or sags due to shifting soil, ground settling, or improper installation. Bellied or sagging pipes create low spots where wastewater can accumulate, leading to persistent clogs and potential sewage backups. This problem is widespread in older properties.

Addressing bellied or sagging pipes typically requires professional assistance. The most effective solution is often pipe replacement, which involves installing new pipes with the proper alignment and grade. Professional plumbers can examine the extent of the damage caused and recommend the best course of action.

Sewer line problems can cause significant inconvenience and damage to a home. And by understanding the common types of problems that can arise and their respective solutions, homeowners can be better prepared to address these problems effectively. Whether dealing with clogged lines, leaking pipes, tree root intrusions, or bellied pipes, seeking professional assistance and taking preventive measures can help ensure a well-functioning and problem-free sewer system. Remember, timely intervention is crucial in avoiding more extensive and costly repairs in the future.
